familiar with GQs 10 Essentials? http://www.gq.com/style/about/ten-essentials

GQ usually feature designers and ask them what are their 10 essentials in life, things that you can do without..

10 Essentials - Hiei

1. Bikes
- I been riding since I was a kid and before we had our first family car, we rely on my dad's bike w/ child carrier at the back. Currently, I have 2 bikes that keeps me fit and sane too. Because the trail doesn't only offer a form of physical exercise but similar to our journey where obstacles can drain you down but if you remain focus you'll overcome it.

2. Music Collection through the years
- It's my time machine. Like a soundtrack that's being played while reminiscing the past.

3. Date and 2nd gen F1 chrono
- Date will be an heirloom in the making which my dad gave and i'll give it to my first born son :) The F1 chrono, was the first watch that I bought from my savings... A bit hard to surrender my payment, it just eased off when I held the F1 :)

4. Basic Tees
- No BS statements... just plain comfy white tees and on every conceivable shades of gray and darkly tones.

5. Car
- Again, we never had one before and the tool for a sport that I am good at.

6. Saeco Aroma SS espresso machine
- Not paying a dime for a coffee that costs more than my lunch and still tastes like piss. I ground my own beans which were  bought from Silang and Amadeo. Then I let my semi-auto espresso machine to do it's stuff... A good tasting cappuccino w/ a shot of espresso, definitely starts my day right!

7. Dry Selvedge Denim
- My college room mate whom both of us where promdi's had our rude awakening during our freshman year. Everything's new to us and far different from our respective provincial high schools. To alleviate his kabaduyan he promised not to wear zip jeans and he'll buy everything button fly. A bit too late I made my statement - not to wash my jeans because only denim that will touch my skin is dry.. unwashed from the factory and made by old looming machines ;)

8. Windows Mobile then Android
- It gets me connected and informed. A digital swissknife where you can call, surf, play, tinker, listen and watch. Keeps me entertained in the middle of night if I'm lazy to pick my laptop.

9. Shoes
- Never had a decent one when I was a kid. Thus, swore I'll have what I want. Got the same sentiments from my dad who used to replace the inner sole of his shoes with cardboard because it's too worn-out.

10. Khaki/chino
- I may run out of jeans but I'm not gonna give up my khakis. It runs deep, been wearing it since gradeschool to highschool - shorts to trousers.

(OT) Good read, hiei. I especially liked the meaning you placed on bikes, basic tees, and your espresso machine.

Will see what 10 essentials i can come up on my own. :)

hiei

luc,
salamat :) kaya may special place para sa akin ang bisikleta. halo-halong emotions maramdaman mo pag nasa trail.

fox,
oo, nga kasi minsan matitigil ka kung mapatugtog man kahit sa radyo ang mga collection mo. naiisip mo the good ole days :) even those songs na matagal mo ng dinaririnig biglang makita mo ang video at mapaisip na last time you heard about it was a decade ago.

post na rin ng 10 essentials nyo... yup, it take a bit of your time but makes you realize the simple stuff that makes you smile.

You started a nice new thread, Hiei!

Madalas ko rin basahin yung 10 essentials ng GQ because it's all very insightful and interesting. Minsan kasi yung ibang essentials ng mga celebs/designers are very inaccessible and some of the items I have no idea what they are. And then some essentials can be so mundane. Ultimately, it's all very personal.

Here are my 10 essentials at the moment:

1) NATO straps

GQ UK endorsed,
http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/style/articles/2012-02/09/smart-turnout-nato-watch-straps-nylon

I like them because I'm able to have a lot of wristwatch styles without having to buy new watches. The straps are very cheap, easily interchangeable and look great with lolo or daddy's vintage watch to make it hip. Currently I use it with my brother's Tag Heuer Grand Carreras. As of the moment I have 5 straps for 5 new looks without having to spend. If it stops being cool, hindi nakakahinayang--I can easily go back to the classic straps anytime. It's also perfect for travelling--multiple new looks without having to pack a lot.

2) Cole Haan Wingtip Chukkas

This is my go-to shoe at the moment because it is super versatile for work and after work drinks at the bar. I use the default black laces para mejo formal pa rin for work. I like to wear them with tapered chinos but they work with jeans too. Right now I use beige laces with it to dress it down and make it a little more casual. I've replaced them with red laces for contrast (these shoes are actually a bit more of a burnished olive-gray color in person), and wore them with slim vintage jeans and it was hip instead of formal. Masarap ilakad because they use Nike technology for the sole and insole so it just feels like comfortable sneakers. The versatility also makes it great for travel.

3) black slim-fit polo shirt / button down

This is the guy's version of the little black dress. Pag tinatamad mag-isip ng isusuot, I just grab a black polo shirt or button down and pair it with slim fit dark jeans. Grab an interesting belt and a good watch. Tapos sneakers, suede, high tops, boots or whatever shoes depende sa lakad. Wala masyado effort.

4) Lint Roller

I own a white himalayan cat and I need a lint roller to remove some of his hair from my black polo shirt. As a cat owner, I use the lint roller A LOT. Otherwise panira ng porma mga buhok buhok ng pusa. Buti nalang meron nito sa Japan Home mura lang.

5) Iphone 4

Iphone user na talaga ako since the first generation. 3-4 years ko din nagamit ung lumang lumang first gen iPhone ko before ko pinalitan ng iPhone4 dahil nadukot sa MRT. Hindi ko pa siya papalitan until siguro iPhone 5 or 5s or unless there's a compelling reason (Siri is not a compelling enough reason to upgrade). Photos, apps, everything. I use it to input some sales information sa spreadsheet para madali ma-track, internet, music, at kahit sa gym kasi may gym app din ako where I put the routine and I key the weight, sets and reps I used tapos may timer pa etc. Di na kelangan ng trainer. Pag jumejebs may companion ako.

6) Ipad

I am a voracious reader and I gobble a lot of books, especially sa fantasy genre (Song of Fire and Ice series, Legend of Drizzt, Neil Gaiman books, etc) so I use the device primarily as an E-Reader. Andali dali magdownload, nakakatipid ako. Also, magazine reading is a breeze. GQ magazine has interactive and video content. Tapos may ipad versions din ng Esquire, men's health, Vman, etc. Ung mga Marvel comics ganda rin basahin and all of it is in one device. Aside from the games pa and other productivity apps, ganda pa gamitin for porn. hehe.

7) Foldable Umbrella

Sa Pilipinas na tag-init or tag-ulan, the umbrella is your best friend. Nagpapayong ako sa labas kahit tanghaling tapat, wala akong pakialam if other people find it emasculating. Ang init eh! Porma mo nga, jabar ka naman. Wala din.

8 ) Aviators
I have photosensitive eyes so I am required to wear shades under the sun at all times. Aviators never go out of style. Nakaka-ilang palit na ako sa cheaper brands pero I invested na on a Rayban na gold-rimmed/green lens. I also started using my dad's vintage 20-year old leather-wrapped ambermatic rayban aviators na dumidilim pag outdoors and stay amber when indoors. I'm not into sporty shades too much.

http://guystylemanila.blogspot.in/2012/02/pilot-post-aviators.html

9) Whey Protein
Just to help maintain weight and it saves time because it's instant breakfast or instant merienda. Lagi pa naman ako late sa umaga and I don't have time to prepare or eat breakfast so I can just drink it and go, or drink it on the way to work.

10) Xbox

Importante yan, lalo na nung nakabitan na ng kinect.

And Hiei-- +100 on your statement socks! That would be my 11th essential! Socks are one of the best ways to really make a statement without being in-your-face about it. And it's generally inexpensive. When I feel daring I'll wear bright red socks. Hindi naman kita eh, kapag umupo ka lang or naglakad, tipong sisilip-silip lang.

Today's socks and nato (mas gusto ko ung socks mo san galing yan):
