Pokemon online is used by trainers to simulate the effectiveness of teams before making legit ones on their portables. In online simulators like this, you can really understand what pokemon battling is all about.

If you are looking for 'discovering the pokemon world' type of online game, I suggest Pokemon World Online. I'm still new at it so I couldn't give you much but it's like any pokemon game and make it online. It's still in beta though and bugs and server crashes are common. They're having a hard time recently because of the C&D filed by Nintendo.

My hybrid NU/UU + 1 OU team isn't performing too well lately but it had humiliated a number of UBER teams.
