kilo,
thanks for the rep :)

chris,
been doing crossfit @ our local box (gym) since november 2013 though i took my first dip few years back kaso bahay lang. iba kapag ginawa mo sa actual crossfit box because of its close knit community, great coaches and competitiveness where motivation will not be a problem ;)

apart from the deals, share mo rin sa akin kasi plano enroll sa crossfit mnl alabang this month... bakasyon ng pinas pero ayaw kong maiwan hehe my question now is kung anong goal mo.

fat loss - yes, but other alternatives like the globos/bodybuilding gym, running/boxing clubs coupled with the right nutrition can do the same thing... on a lower membership cost pa.

defined muscular physique - it may bust your bubbles pero most boxes have average looking members... but pack a big punch in terms of over-all fitness. kaya kung 6-pack-for-summer, bodybuilding is still king.

supplementary work-out - a BIG yes! malaki tulong nito if you're doing other activities like biking, running, swimming, wakeboarding, basketball, football... you can inform your coach abt your plans

over-all fitness - a BIG yes, here are the 10 principles that sum up cross-fit

Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance – The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.
Stamina – The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
Flexibility – The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
Speed – The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
Coordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
Agility – The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
Balance – The ability to control the placement of the bodies center of gravity in relation to its support base.
Accuracy – The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

???? strength + cardio + stamina + power + speed... work-outs na you need to run then do couple of exercises and lifting in multiple rounds... pabilisan but still able to lift
flexibility + coordination + agility + balance + accuracy... apart sa olympic lifting and running, matuto ka rin ng gymnastic skills aka party tricks hehe

goodluck chris! and hope you join one of those local CF box :) sana malapit ka rin sa crossfit mnl alabang para may kasama ako haha

Btw you can contact crossfit mnl and crossfit insurrecto... they have free intro classes and yes may work out to assess your current fitness level.. magandang article yan ;)

Chris,
YES :) YES :) Unlike 90% of globos... crossfit will not immediately release you to the wild without knowing the basics. may on-ramp class aka fundamentals na tuturuan ka ng basics. hiwalay na class kayo from the regulars. even na matapos mo ang fundamentals di nila expect na you'll lift RX (required weight). the protocol on lifting weight is FORM muna then you need to carry it with SPEED then saka na ang WEIGHT.

Injury? it happens kung mali ang form at pinipilit bumuhat ng mabigat which sacrifices proper form and execution. may mobility exercise rin to help you with issues sa flexibility, tightness, muscle bumps... paraan to prep the muscle para iwas injury. sa crossfit ko na lang rin naintindihan issues ko sa right shoulder which is tight. daming mga previous soreness and tightness ko na na-relieve using mobility tulad sa quads, lower back and shins.

My take on crossfit - it's good and beneficial but its not for everyone.  ;D

With those high intensity movements, if your joints are not suited for it, you might get injured.
I enrolled in a mala-crossfit na gym before. Gusto ko yung exercises and the intensity. I even lost a whopping 10lbs.. but 3 months after I stopped because my knee joints start to hurt. Upon advice of the sport doc, I sadly stopped.

Now I'm doing the çlassic and time-tested bodybuilding :). I know my goals now, and body aesthetics are more important to me than athleticism, which crossfit delivers.

What irks me about crossfit is how it is marketted so that it will be accessible to the masa even with no prior exercise experience or without some adequate level of fitness to start with. It was designed in the first place for "elite" athletes so that they could train to improve their athletic abilities and the training is customized to the sport they are doing.

So do some intensive research first, then try it. Malay mo bagay pala sa ýo. ;D

dong-U,

sorry to hear about your bad experience, can you kindly share kung anong programs nung nagsimula ka? at anong exercise that caused your knee joints to hurt.

pero teka nabanggit mo mala-crossfit gym... still not a crossfit affiliate that has governing rules to stay within coach glassman's concept.

if you read my previous post, may fundamentals or on ramp class to help ALL the noobies. even 'seasoned bodybuilders' maging beneficial to take the on ramp class. complicated ang mga olympic lifts.

crossfit was conceptualized by greg glassman to help gymnasts. di naman elite athletes per se but as supplementary nung teenager pa sya na competitive  gymnast.... yung nakikita mo sa TV na elite crossfitters they have a different programming which is as a sport.... compared sa nakikita mo sa mga regular class na crossfit as a fitness but still mahirap pa rin as a fitness and eto rin gamit ng mga sundalo, police, fireman na madalas rin mag-enroll sa mga boxes.

research? i think the details i gave chris is more than enough, i even asked him na ano ba goals mo and explained each possible goal na may alternative methods to reach it. kaya the next best thing is to actually try the free class ng crossfit. yep the actual crossfit not a clone.

Chris

thanks for the inputs dong-U and hiei

I visited a cross-fit box in makati, they have a 101 class where they teach the basics and proper form for a number of sessions.

hiei / dong-U - one thing I'd like to know is kung gaano sila ka "pushy" when it comes to workouts. do they push you beyond your limits?

Chris,
Sakto tanong mo coz what happened earlier sa box. Pero bago yan... A good coach pushes you to SAFELY go beyond your boundaries. At alam nila kng ligtas pa rin bang gawin at within your potentials. Ang cue nila dyan is proper form. Once na masacrifice na ang form regardless sa intensity or weight, your coach will tell you to stop and scale down the work suited to your fitness level.

Sample ng bad push
- forcing you to lift heavier weight na mali na form.... kng di pa kaya ang form just stick to qn empty bar or kahit pvc pipe lang. Even sa running, if you're just dragging your feet theyll ask youb to stop and do rowing na lang as a scale down version.

Samplr ng good push
- nangyari ito ngayon lang after the strength and metcon wod may finisher tabata ng yourr choice of standard planks or one amrm above head planks or kng halimaw ka one arm and leg up planks kng nag fail from 1 of the 8 rounds mag 5 burpee penalty ka.... I was doing th4 standard and modesty aside I can do it whole night, ayoko ng burpee kaya safeside heh3 most of the guys are showing signs of buckling down kya sign of failing form and impending failure of the round.... kaya nung nakita ko na relax and holding the form. He pushed me to do the 1 arm anf 1 leg plank.... push to conquer my limits... safely.

Another example is the weighted push ups. Tinapos ko ng 90lb plate and told him im good na sa strength wod. Pero pibabalik ako since kaya ko pa.

This are th type of a good pushy coach kasi nilalabas ka nya sa comfort levels mo. BUT still depende pa rin sa goal mo. Yun iba kasi they do it safely by scaling down... tama nga ang form and they try to coast lang ang work out. Ok lang kung yun ang gusto nila since ita already a great work out... but if you want to unleash the beast in you, you have to push the boundaries and explore your potentials :)

Chris

thanks hiei. so you are doing it in alabang while you're in Manila?

hiei

chris,
yes :) mahirap mawala sa sirkulasyon at baka maiwan. kelan ka magsimula?

Late feb pa dating namin. 3wks na vacation lng, bka limited 6 classes lng kunin ko kasi panay rn out of town nmin.
Thats great at ginawaan mo na ng sched to commit na matapos mo ang fundamentals / 101 class. Dont worry abt weight / loading.... kahit bar lang tutok k sa form then intensity saka na load.
