I would rather have a country run like hell by Filipinos than a country run like heaven by the Americans, because however a bad Filipino government might be, we can always change it. - Manuel L. Quezon
I disagree. If Manuel L. Quezon didn't fight our sovereignty baka 51st state na ng Amerika ang Pinas. See how Manila (pictures I post in general chat "the great manila yesterday" ) when Americans came, disiplinado at malinis ang manila. See Baguio city now, americans were the ones who designed it to be full of variety of pine trees pero ano ginawa ng mga pinoys pinutol ang mga trees at ginawang malaking golf course. tsk tsk.
I thnk mas progressive sana ang Philippines ngayon. Mas gusto ko pa yung run like heaven by the Americans.

I was looking for a better source pero economics talaga yung nagpush for the separation. Both Roxas and Quezon actually pushed for independence which was actually approved by US congress.

"American sugar beet, tobacco, and dairy farmers feared the competition of low-tariff insular products, and the hardships suffered in a deepening depression in the early 1930s led them to seek protection through a severance of the colonial relationship."
Actually the USA has a lot of bases elsewhere like Turkey and Japan. Obviously they would have gained more by making japan as a state than the philippines. but they didn't.
let us not underestimate what our future generations can do.. i think we must do something for the younger generations.. ika nga ng pambansang bayani "ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan", pero kung hahayaan nga naman nating nasa lansangan at walang pinag-aralan ang mga kabataan.. ano pa nga ba ang aasahan natin para sa ating bansa in the future? 'wag na tayong masyadong umasa sa gobyerno.. tumulong tayo sa mga kabataan in our own little way.

This country is doomed. No more heroes left to fight for it.
Maybe not. Heroes spring from extreme circumstances. If you would compare the current state of the country relative to other points in its history where there were many great heroes, now is not an extreme circumstance.

humans not only filipinos are self centered in nature. This also happens to all countries in the world. Makasarili talaga ang bawat tao. Nagbabago lang iyon pag guided by faith and belief in God.

So sad, but I think the government should start doing something about our fellow countrymen at sa atin na rin.

that is true. ang hirap ng image building. takes years.
on the Filipinos chocolate biscuit - i dont mind them using the brand, although its bad marketing for us (Filipinos) but it also affects their brand equity with what the word Filipinos is associated for. magbaba-back fire din yan kapag panget ang image ng "filipinos" as against we have a good reputation. its also a challenge. in the end, sila rin maapektuhan. it just "sounds" racist being "dark on the outside and white on the inside"
'dark on the outside, and white on the inside'... one reason kung bakit sa tingin ko mas racist tayo.. hehehehe..

yeah you have a point angelo, the bad thing is mas lalong bumaba tingin nila sa ating mga pinoy. Nasa grocery store ako minsan at may pumulot ng FILIPINO biscuit binasa niya, tiningnan at tumawa sabay sabi "cheap biscuit, cheap people."
Anyway, i have found a site and it is giving the definition for us FILIPINOS.

di kasi tayo parehas sa standards of living at quality of life compared sa ibang bansa. Technology din wala rin tayong laban :(

you will see that here in middle east like me :D I just don't know to ofw's in US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand where people are dying for a green card and citizenship ;D
Ako naman, I choose to work for my country. I won't leave the Philippines for good. Perhaps I'll get some training abroad but definitely I will be back to help Filipinos especially sa rural areas. :-)

that's nice ctan ;D kudos for you. very few who believes in this and I salute you for that.
Lahat ng pinoys ganyan din from the start pero when they are already working, hinde pala sapat ang magwork lang, you need to survive also and aspire for the things you want to have. Siguro, if you're coming from an elite family and well off family, masasabi mo yan kahit sa pagtanda mo, pero like me, an ordinary poor citizen whose parents struggles to finish my college also aspires to experience to feel comfy in life. I don't feel comfy working sa pinas, pera ko nauubos lang sa pagkain at transport minsan abono pa. it's like i'm working to survive and not having the benefits of a quality life. (for sure yung mga nagdodoktor may mga kaya sa buhay, expensive ang tuition + other things kya nga hinde ako pinagdoktor :D) Sabi ko sa sarili ko, paano na ang future ko at yung umaasa sa akin? wala naman ako malipatan na mas mataas ang sahod sa dami ng walang work sa pinas. twice a year meron nagiging board passers for every course pano na yung ibang walang work?
The only solution that comes to my mind, try my luck outside the country, just like what the others did. after 4 years working in pinas and 2 years struggling applying work abroad nabigyan din ako ng chance yun nga lang sa middle east (least of my expectation ;D). First 2 years was a nightmare, napuntahan ko palang company ay mapagsamantala mababa pala na sahod iyon which i dont know kasi feeling ko mas mataas kesa sa pinas plus walang bawas for the taxes hahaha, tapos i work overtime but i was paid half of it only. 2 years struggle yon and after that contract i look for another company, eto medyo ok na ako ngayon. I've been 3 years with this current one and counting. Flashing back the years, I don't regret any of it. If I stayed in pinas, I don't know kung ano kinahinatnan ko baka isang levis na pants binabayaran ko pa ng hulugan at puro utang. No offense to people working sa pinas, i'm just stating my experience.
I don't blame other filipinos who work abroad and applied for permanent residency/ citizenship lalo na sa US, UK, Canada, etc mas magaan ang buhay nila sa ibang bansa kesa sa pinas, why suffer di ba? pero when they retire from work babalik din nman sila sa pinas para maenjoy naman ang kanilang konting ipon at benefits ;D yung iba hinde na talaga umuwi kasi nagkapamilya na abroad and yung mga matanda na hinde na makapagwork nasa home care for the elders na financed by their children. I realize life is so short, magugulat ka na lang magreretire ka na din pala kc everyone is busy working and everyone is busy putting up their own family, their kids schooling, etc.
my point is, it is not necessary na pag nag-abroad ka, you're turning down pinas or you're not being nationalistic. Loan ng bahay for 30 years, magarang sasakyan di makuntento sa isa kundi dalawang BMW pa loan for 5 years kaya nakatali na sa ibang bansa :D it's hard to work in a place you know you don't belong kasi ibang lahi ka, iba ang culture nila, iba salita nila, iba ang religion nila and you're here because of your expertise at work that they can't do. They are using us here para lumaki ang profit ng company nila at lalo silang yumaman. parang unfair di ba? ang kunswelo or in return of my services ginawang thrice ang salary higher than sa pinas pero malayo pa din sa loved ones.
I just don't buy this one kasi lahat kayo magugutom afterwards. Tama na ako yung magsacrifice for them. Naks! para maenjoy naman nila ang comfy life. simpleng ngiti at tawa nila kapalit ng sakripisyo ko dito. masaya na ako for them. dito na ako hanggang retiring age and uuwi na lang sa pinas pag di na nila kailangan ang services ko dito :( that's life. kahit papaano nakakauwi sa pinas every year for a month ok na ako dun sa ganung routine. so boring! what motivates me to stay is ayoko makitang nagugutom o nagsusuffer family ko lalo na matanda na parents ko :)
what i suggest. yung mga araw na wala kayong pasok, enjoy nyo with your family and have quality time wag kayong matulog lang sa higaan maghapon hehehe. Kasi kami dito nakakasama lang namin family namin every year. yung ibang contract dito every two years worst, meron pa nga every 3 years.
I appreciate your "reflection" brusko. :-) That was nice.
Hopefully, I would be true to what I aspire to do. So far, in all my exposures, nothing compares to helping out fellow Filipinos here in our country.
This thread makes me sad, especially pinoybrusko's reply.

pinoybrusko's very reflective reply made me remember about a major decision i made seven years ago...after finishing my masters in mathematics, a friend invited me to apply for a teaching job in california...out of curiosity, i submitted my documents and was interviewed by a school principal from california..in short, i was technically hired but i decided to not to pursue the "american dream" after i realized that despite my financial difficulties, im still happy with my life here in the philippines ;D
