Question. When you are scheduled for blood test, do you need to fast the night before?

When I was confined before and they took blood samples from me, hindi rin ako pina-fast. But a few times they specifically said that I need to fast when they told me to get a blood test the next day.

Does it depend on the type of blood test to be performed?

Also, what are the guidelines for fasting? I've heard that more than 12 hours is over-fasting. Is drinking of liquids allowed?

Depends. Maraming blood tests. Pero i'll discuss siguro the most common ones.

Pag Complete Blood Count (CBC) hinde kailangan magfast.

Usually you need to fast for blood sugar, lipids tests kasi food intake will distort these values. 12 hours is usually enough, and we usually suggest starting the fast after dinner and taking the blood test first thing in the morning.  You can drink a glass of water once in the morning but not sugared drinks.

RE: other ones, i'll answer them later when i'm free... medyo busy eh. i'm sure the nurses can answer some of them :D

People with blood pressure readings of 140/90 or higher, taken on at least 2 occasions, are said to have high blood pressure. If the pressure remains high, your doctor will probably begin treatment.

tama, hypertension is just the same banana with high blood. layman's term kasi ang highblood.

in classifying hypertension, we follow the JNC-7 guidelines na kapag equal or above 120/80 ang BP mo, ikaw ay classified na as PREHYPERTENSIVE. Hanggang 139/89 ang prehypertensive stage. ibig sabihin lang ng prehypertensive is that increased na ang risk mo to develop hypertensive in the future and that kelangan mo na magkaroon ng lifestyle modification to prevent it. kapag naman equal or above 140/90 hanggang 159/99 ang BP mo, ikaw ay STAGE 1 HYPERTENSIVE. and kapag more than or equal to 160/100 ang BP mo, STAGE 2 HYPERTENSIVE ka naman na. :-)

if ever stage 1 or stage 2 hypertensive ka, you need to see a doctor kasi you need to start on medications so as to prevent or delay the end-stage diseases of hypertension. :-)

eto lang marfz, kung essential hypertension yan, iwas ka na kumain ng mga maaalat na mga pagkain. salty foods are the number one cause of hypertension. then you have to do lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, avoid a sedentary lifestyle, smile and laugh more often. :-)

regarding eating yung matataba na food, actuallym it doesn't cause hypertension. however, it does contribute to developing cardiac or heart problems. pwede kang magka heart attack. again, hindi high blood or hypertension ang dinudulot ng fatty foods kundi ang mga heart diseases or heart attacks. :-)

Marky

Yung may mai-a-advise sa Pectus Carinatum?
Thanks ;)
Ano po problem sa pigeon chest? You need to find an orthopedic surgeon to correct it.
Pigeon chest poses a risk factor for cardian and pulmonary problems pero usually its a cosmetic complaint.
Baka po kasi pede ma-resolve without undergoing surgery. Kasi as much as possible I don't want to suffer from it in the long run. Doc thank you nga po pala sa response

so kailangan na ba natin mag open ng topic na the nurse is in? in case the doctor is out?

Anyone is free to answer. We respect wisdom and knowledge from other people especially if its correct. Kung may nasabi naman na matino na information we will just add in more other stuff so everyone learns. Kung may mali.. nirerespeto namin yung ideas nila and we'll say our side in a nice way (unless talagang ginagago mo ako haha :P).

May times na baka mas maraming alam ang mga nurses, PT, med tech (i love their knowledge sa labs), and even patients. We have the internet naman as a resource; there are cases I have to open the book and read and cross-reference sa isang reliable site or a guideline.

hahaha... nagbibiro lang ako kilo sa "the nurse is in, the doctor is out."

Try to consult first with an ortho kung pano gagawin niya sa pectus mo.

tama. it's better to know your health status than regretting in the future kasi hindi mo na naagapan. :-)
