Vote online for Philippine NGO in BBC World Challenge 2010

We would like to invite all Pinoys and Non-Pinoys to please vote for this great project of Philippine non-government organization AID Foundation (AIDFI) and its hydraulic ram pump program. It has been selected as one of the 12 finalists in the BBC World Challenge 2010.

You can vote for AIDFI's ram pump project on http://www.theworldchallenge.co.uk/2010-finalists-project08.php.

Voting ends midnight (GMT) on the 12th of Novermber 2010. Please spread the word to your friends worldwide and make AIDFI a winner and help them spread the ram pump all over the world.

The finalists of the World Challenge will be profiled on BBC World News in six 30 minute programmes and included in six feature pieces in Newsweek magazine.

From a group of five working in a rented small bodega (warehouse) equipped with few tools and facilities in 1992, AIDFI has become an institution, or some say, an icon in development work in Negros, in the Philippines, and internationally.

In 1997, AIDFI made a renewed push in its work by focusing this time on the designing, fabrication, installation and development of appropriate technologies in support of sustainable and organic agriculture initiatives.

Beginning 2003 and 2004, AIDFI responded to new set of needs, that of designing and fabricating a distiller for the lemon grass producers in some communities, putting up of systems like biogas, micro hydro power and windmill to produce electricity in areas un-reached by big commercial power corporations.

By December 2008, AIDFI had already installed 157 hydraulic ram pump units nationwide, and other water and energy systems, in more than a hundred poor agricultural communities benefiting around 35,000 or more individuals.

It also responded to the call of international solidarity through technology transfer by installing ram pump units in Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, West Timor, France, Nepal, Cambodia, and in Afghanistan in 2008.

To sustain all these projects, AIDFI had to put up a bigger office, with a fabrication shop conforming to industrial standards, and backed by adequate administrative and technical support.

In October 2008, AIDFI opened its Techno (logy) Park right within its office compound, to showcase its appropriate technologies. To date, the TechnoPark has already accommodated more than a thousand of "techno exposurists" from the academe, science and technology sector, non-government and people's organizations, local government units, and even well-to-do agricultural producers seeking solution to today's higher cost of production and farm inputs. The rate of visitors is still increasing by the month.

Another milestones in AIDFI's development are the international awards and recognitions it garnered in recent years. Among them, a recognition of excellence in renewable energy (Hydraulic Ram Pump) through an award during the 1st Green – E Awards last December 06, 2006, sponsored by the Philippine government's Department of Energy.

AIDFI was also a finalist in the prestigious Ashden Awards in London on June23, 2007, for best practices in renewable energy; a winner of Philippine BID Challenge Competition 2007 for its community-based lemon grass essential oil production and hydrosol, finalist in the Energy Globe Award held in the European Parliament in 2008, and a personal invitee by former US President Bill Clinton to his Clinton Global Initiatives (CGI) in Hongkong December 2008 for its ram pump water system.

In March 2009, AIDFI was among the top 30 finalists for the Kyoto Prize, and a presenter in the recently concluded 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey. In the world gathering, AIDFI was also a contestant to the Turkish Prime Minister for Journalism Excellence on water issues.

As of July 2010 ram pumps have been installed in 170 upland villages, benefiting around 50,000 people.
