Unveiling of the New Generation Philippine Banknotes

The image of the late President Corazon Aquino has now joined the image of her husband, the late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., on the new P500 bill.

The inclusion of Mrs. Aquino, mother of President Benigno Aquino III, on the P500 bill is part of the redesigning of all Philippine peso bank notes that was unveiled by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Thursday.



President Aquino, whose signature can now be seen in new banknotes the BSP started releasing late last month, led the launching of the new bank notes in Malacañang.

All six denominations — P20, P50, P100, P200, P500, and P1,000 — have new designs.

The central bank earlier said it has decided to upgrade the security features of all banknotes to make it easier for the public to detect fake money.

According to the BSP website, the banknotes' security features consist of, among others, security threads, fibers, watermarks, invisible fluorescent inks, optically variable ink, microprint, and moire pattern and iridescent band.

A banknote's design is first conceptualized before it is drawn by an artist into a prototype banknote. Once the prototype has been approved, printing plates will be produced.

The production of banknotes consists of litho printing; intaglio printing; sheet inspection; numbering; tenning (where numbered sheets are inspected every tenth sheet to check if there are defects); and finishing which includes cutting, counting and packaging, according to the BSP. — KBK/VS, GMANews.TV

- While the image of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will remain on the P200 bill, it will be much smaller and moved to the bottom left corner of the bill.
- A younger looking Manuel L. Quezon on the new P20 bill; Banawe Rice Terraces at the reverse side.
- Sergio Osmena on the new P50 bill; Taal Lake featured on the reverse side.
- The new P100 bill with Manuel A. Roxas; Mayon Volcano and Sorsogon's butanding on the reverse side.

The new design of the blue-tinted P1,000 bill that supposedly proclaims the beauty of Southern Philippines' Tubbataha Reefs — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — seems to have gotten the site's location wrong by over 300 km, keen online observers have been quick to point out.

Over 300 km off the mark
However, Republic Act 10067, signed into law by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in April 2010, clearly defines the official bounds of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park using very specific geocoordinates.

The area indicated on the P1000 bill is over 300 km off the mark from the coordinates defined in RA 10067.

"The mark on the bill is supposed to show just the general location [of the reef]," said Fe M. Dela Cruz, the Central Bank's Director for Corporate Affairs, via telephone.

GMANews.TV sent Dela Cruz an email detailing the discrepancy, but the Central Bank has yet to issue an official statement as of posting time.


Misplaced Palawan park
Meanwhile, the New Media Philippines blog questioned the accuracy of the location of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean Park as indicated on the new P500 bill.

"The location in the bill makes it seem that the park is inland. They should have moved the marker nearer to the upper edge and a bit lower and closer to Puerto Princesa," the blog said.

The blog also questioned why the Batanes islands at the northernmost tip of the country seem not to have been included in any of the new designs.

"Batanes is one of the most beautiful places in the country and it's not included, why?" the blog asked.

i got hold of the fifty and twenty which are the onky ones out pa lang..

i go with ms delacruz that we only pinpoint the general location...
as with the beak, there are technical limitations with the machine.. not everyone knows that these new notes are not printed here in our country.

ang sa akin, gusto ko ibalik na nila yung 2,5 and 10 peso bills.. hassle talaga yng coins. pero nagtitipid ang government... hay..

i was born in the 80's right before the revolution... may "residue" pa nung mga bagong lipunan bills, in fact they were still acceptable.. same principle when the new bills start circulating (i guess early next year as people would still hold on to them)
